This trip visits some of the most panoramic temples and landscapes in Bali. The drive leads through small villages and rice field country. As we climb higher into the mountains the rice plots become smaller and terraced on the mountainside.
The first stop is the Royal Temple of Mengwi, Pura Taman Ayun build in 1634. This picturesque temple complex is surrounded by a moat, and has multi roofed shrines and intricately carved wooden gates. You can enjoy the nice tropical garden set above the main temple area and climb up to one of the buildings to see the panoramic view from up top.
Our journey continues to Pacung while we enjoy the spectacular views of the northern part of Bali. In the mountains, the vegetation changes along the way and you will see cabbage, corn and potatoes being grown. As we climb even higher, the countryside changes again to alpine, with creepers and ferns.
Serene Lake Beratan fills the ancient crater of Mount Batukaru. Here the local people honor the Goddess of the water, Dewi Danu. The delightful small temple of Ulun Danu dedicated to this goddess, is built on a small promontory on the lake. This temple is one of the most important for Subak (water irrigation system organization) as locals believe that all the water is coming from the lake.
Our next stop will be at the widest rice terrace in Bali called Jatiluwih. It is considered a cultural heritage site by UNESCO as the area maintains the local culture of water irigation systems managed traditionaly.
The last stop for the tour is at the Tanah Lot and Batu Bolong temples. Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s most famous temples. Although this place is bit crowd at sunset the view from the temple area is worth seeing. This 16th century temple is built on black lava rock 200 meters off shore. Tide permitting, you can walk across the beach to the temple.
